Week 3-2 Teaching Phonics

Assignment#3 Lesson plan on Phonics with Technology

Grade Level:  Kindergarten
Title of the lesson:  phonics lesson – Rhyme
Length of the lesson:  45 min

Central focus of the lessons
Students will be able to identify rhyming words

Knowledge of students to inform teaching (prior knowledge/prerequisite skills and personal/cultural/community assets)
       Phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence

Common Core State Standards

Phonological Awareness:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2  Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). 
a. Recognize and produce rhyming words
b. Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words
c. Blend and segment onsets and rhymes of single-syllable spoken words
d. Isolate and pronounce the initial, media vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (CVC) words. 
e. Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words. 

Phonics and Word Recognition:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
a.     Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.
c)     Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding

1.     Will learn the concepts of rhyme words
2.     Will identify rhyming words and make the sounds based on the phonic awareness

Formal and informal assessment (including type[s] of assessment and what is being assessed)
       Rhyme words activity
Instructional procedure:
1.     Ask students if they know what rhyme means and see if they can give some examples.
2.     Explain Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sounds.  Ex: “Cat”, “Fat”, “Hat” are rhyming words. 
3.     Play the eBook “Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss, which will read aloud the story in rhymes and have the students to repeat after the narrator.
4.     Write words on Smartboard: “Cat”, “Box”, “Hop”, “Pan”, “Wall”, “bad”, then invite students to come write some rhyme words under each words that they learn from eBook.
5.     Give out Rhyme words worksheet for each student.  Read aloud the words and check to see if students understand meanings of each word.
6.     Each student will cut out the words as word card and then pair up the rhyme words together.
