1) My understanding of the ELA instruction:
English Language Arts instruction is set into 2 sections: Kindergarten - Grade 5 in which standards focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening and Language; and Grade 6 -12 in which standards are set for English Language Arts teacher and for subject teachers.
On the 4 key features, reading standards guide on teaching complexity and growth of comprehension; Writing standards guide on teaching ability to plan, revise, edit and publish writing in several different writing types: arguments, information/ explanatory texts, and narratives; Speaking and Listening standards guides on students expressing ideas based on gathered information students may get from oral, visual, quantitative and media sources; Language is standards to guide students to enhance their understanding of vocabulary meaning and the effective use of the vocabulary.
2) What I learned from the video of Shilla Owen's Grade 2 classroom in which almost half of the class are ELLs. Everyday there are 4 reading activities and the goal is to gradually release responsibility from teacher to students. The ultimate goal is to train students to be independent readers and writers by the end of the semester:
1. Read aloud - teacher read to students
2. Shared reading - students increase their responsibility, ex: discussion, answer questions, etc.
3. Guided reading - scaffolding the reading work to students
4. Independent reading - students full involvement with teacher observing their reading and writing performance
3) Critique on the sample lesson plan:
It is a good lesson plan with gradual release responsibilities. However, if the class involve ELL students, the teacher may need to spend some more time by making sure that all students understand the vocabularies in the book and fully understand the book first in order to introduce the sample of found poem.
